Our History

    For more than 40 years, the Preble County Board of Developmental Disabilities continues to support individuals who are making a positive difference in their lives and in the community. All Preble County residents can be proud of these individuals.

    When Senate Bill 79 passed unanimously in both Ohio houses of the legislature in the summer of 2009, the term “mental retardation” was dropped from the name of all 88 county boards and at the state level. For more than 40 years, this term had been used in a negative and hurtful way to describe individuals with developmental disabilities. Click here to read our story.

Public Participation at PCBDD Meetings
    The Preble County Board of Developmental Disabilities has established a policy that permits a fair and orderly expression of public input in formulating specific direction for the Board of Developmental Disabilities. (Public Participation in Board of DD Meetings, Section 2.17.) The policy was approved at the Board’s November 9, 2010, regular meeting.

    During a period at/or near the conclusion of each agenda for public participation, the following procedures will be followed (not a complete list):

    • All remarks shall be addressed to the Board as a body, not to any one member of the board;
    • All persons wishing to participate in a public board meeting must notify the Board’s administrative office 24 hours in advance of the meeting, or the preceding business day when a holiday occurs, and include:
    • Name and address of participant
    • Group affiliation, if any
    • Topic to be discussed.
    • Statements shall be limited to three (3) minutes;

    Participants may not speak more than once on the same topic unless all others who wish to speak on that topic have been heard. Then, if a participant wishes to readdress the board, the presiding officer will determine if further discussion is appropriate.

    If an entire group has a concern, it is the responsibility of that group to appoint a spokesperson that best represents the interests of those impacted. The purpose is to eliminate redundancy and accentuate clarity of the items discussed.

    To request a complete copy of this policy in writing, please visit the Preble County Board of Developmental Disabilities Administrative Offices, 200 Eaton-Lewisburg Road, Eaton, Ohio.
